NEWS
The Salem Area Historical Society has begun the process to obtain a Washtenaw County Local Historic District (LHD) designation for the Jarvis Stone School, the Dickerson Barn and the associated property. The creation of a LHD Study Committee has been approved by the Salem Township Board of Trustees, the Washtenaw County Historic District Commission and the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners. The LHD Study Committee is comprised of Jean Bemish, Terry Cwik, Sue DiMilia, Helen Gierman, Jane Griffith, Marie Turppa, Marcia Van Fossen and Nancy Snyder, WCHDC Chair, as liaison to the WCHDC along with Melissa Milton-Pung and Cynthia B. Christensen, staff to the WCHDC. This Study Committee is now in the process of gathering information to be used in writing the Study Committee Report. If you have any documentation and/or photographs of the Jarvis Stone School or the Dickerson Barn that you are willing to share with the Study Committee, please contact Terry Cwik at Salem_Area_HS@yahoo.com.
Wednesday, Jan. 25 -- 7:30 PM
at Salem Township Hall
On Wednesday, Jan.25th, SAHS held its Annual Budget Membership Meeting with a viewing of the DVD "From Moccasins to Main Street: A Journey Down the Old Chicago Road". It began as a Native American foot trail. It later became a military road connecting Fort Detroit to Fort Dearborn in Chicago. It was traveled by explorers, missionaries and fur trappers. Eventually small communities appeared along it with just the right distance between them to refresh the horses of the stagecoach and replenish the water supply of the steam engine. This is the story of the evolution of transportation in Michigan. This is a journey down the Old Chicago Road.
Community Foundation of Plymouth Grant
Monday, Dec. 19 -- 3:00 PM
at Jarvis Stone School
On Monday, December 19th, the Community Foundation of Plymouth (CFP), represented by Kathy Aznavorian and William Lawson, presented a $1,000 grant check to the Salem Area Historical Society (SAHS) for the Jarvis Stone School Michigan State Historic Marker Project. SAHS started the process to obtain the state historic marker. The Salem Area Historical Society feels that an historic designation is fitting because the school is a fine example of the one-room schoolhouses that were the initial foundation of public education in Washtenaw County. In addition, the Jarvis Stone School is even more unique in that it is constructed of fieldstone.
SAHS Christmas Party
Sunday, Dec. 4 -- 1:00 PM
at Paul Uherek's Home
The Salem Area Historical Society 2011 Events concluded on December 4th with its Annual Membership Christmas Party. This event attended by twenty-four members was graciously hosted by Paul Uherek and was the perfect social event to close out a very successful 2011 year for SAHS. The honoree for 2011 was Marcia Van Fossen. It was a great afternoon of friendship shared in a great setting.
SAHS Meeting
Wednesday, Oct 26 -- 7:30 PM
at Jarvis Stone School
On Wednesday, Oct. 26th, SAHS held a General Membership Meeting with a presentation by Susan Nenadic entitled "Seeing the Elephant: Female Soldiers and Spies in the Civil War". Nenadic taught history and English in Saline Area Schools. Since her retirement in 2004, she has taught women's history for non-credit programs at WCC, the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University. Her presentation confirmed that women participated in the Civil War in many ways including being soldiers and spies.
The Conant Farm Local Historic District has been approved by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners. A report on the Conant Farm Local Historic District can be found using the link below.
