South Salem Jarvis Stone School

Built 1857, the school was in continuous use until 1967. In 1978 the property was deeded to the SAHS. In 1993, restoration began with the result being our fine example of a one room school house.  We hold most of the SAHS meetings there.

The Jarvis Stone School was 150 years old in 2007.

 The Frontroom Renovation Project

In the spring of 2008, the SAHS Membership agreed to use the SAHS's funds to complete a renovation of the Frontroom of the Jarvis-Stone School.  This addition was addded to the school in 1941.  It is a three phase project.  In the fall of 2008, SAHS submitted two application for grants to fund this project.  SAHS was awarded a grant of $2,174 for this project by the Community Foundation of Plymouth, which is administered through the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation.

The first phase included the repair of the roof.  In June, the SAHS Board hired Fairplay Home Maintenance, LLC (734-699-6976) to strip the old roof and re-shingle it.  The job was started and completed on June 6, 2009.

More work sessions for SAHS members were held in July and August.  The interior Stone wall was washed in the first work session.  In the second, it was primed and painted.

SPK Flooring completed the sub-flooring in Sept 2010.

Several work sessions were held in January and February of 2010 to build the interior walls and hang the bathroom door.  In attendance for these were: Jim DiMilia, Mike Brautigan, Karl Gierman and Terry Cwik.

In August and Ocotber of 2010 the rough electrical was completed and passed inspection.

Jim DiMilia took the two small windows down and refinished them and rehung them in October of 2010.

In October and November of 2010, Jim DiMilia and Terry Cwik added to the ceiling insulation and hung the wall insulation.

In January and February of 2011, the drywall was hung by Jim DiMilia, Mike Brautigan, Karl Gierman, Wayne Wallazy and Terry Cwik.

The drywalls were taped and mudded in May 2010.
